Memento is presented in two alternating sequences of scenes; one set, filmed in black and white, progresses forward, while the second set are in color and presented in reverse order. The two sequences "meet" at the end of the film, thus overall describing one common story [1]. The plot is described below in chronological order (not in the order that scenes are shown in the film).
The protagonist of the story is Leonard Shelby, a man with anterograde amnesia, impairing his ability to story memories of recent events. As Leonard explains in the film, his amnesia was a result of an attack by two men in his home. Leonard killed one of the attackers who was strangling his wife but the second attacker escaped after hitting Leonard in the head.
As the black-and-white narrative opens, he wakes up in a hotel room and receives a call. Leonard explains about his memory problem and the case of Sammy Jankis. Leonard, while an insurance investigator, met Sammy who after a car accident appeared to suffer anterograde amnesia. Tests showed Sammy could not learn through routine, and Leonard attributed his condition as psychological, denying him coverage. Sammy's wife conducted her own experiment to try to prove Sammy's condition was physical, and died from complications of repeated injections of insulin given to her by Sammy. In considering Sammy's failure, Leonard has developed his own system, using a combination of tattoos and Polaroid photographs with written notes to himself, to retain information between his lapses.
